New Year’s Eve Parties and Dinners at Lake Atitlan

There’s a New Year’s Eve dinner from 6-9 PM at Cafe la Puerta, with choice of three gourmet entrees for Q65. A few steps down Seventh Avenue from this restaurant, El Barrio’s bash has an open bar (with wrist band) from 9 PM to midnight, with live music and drink specials.

In the zona viva, Alegre Pub’s New Year celebrates the ringing of Big Ben at 6 PM, with live video from London. Live music from 6:30-8 PM, and the official New Year’s Eve party at 9 PM with DJ Freddy.

Cannabis (Marijuana) Still Illegal in Guatemala

A recent story in Guatemala’s El Periodico reporting that over-the-counter marijuana sales will being on January 15 in four provinces proved to be a joke. It came out on December 28, Day of the Innocents, which is the local version of April Fool’s Day.

However, the President continues to lobby for legalization of drugs for commercial growing and sales, both in Guatemala and other Central American countries, and has even done so at the United Nations. While marijuana remains illegal, the laws against possession of small amounts are rarely enforced at Lake Atitlan and other parts of Guatemala, as long as people don’t smoke openly.

Hotels and Hostels in San Pedro la Laguna

Many hotels and hostels in San Pedro la Laguna are full today, so count on looking around town if arriving without a reservation. But don’t panic! There are lots of hostels in San Pedro. Guides who greet the shuttles will know which places have vacancies.

Hotels in San Pedro, Lake Atitlan: Mikaso

The town’s top hotel is Hotel Mikaso, near the dock for boats to Santiago. Mikaso has views of the volcanoes and the lake, a great restaurant and is reasonably priced for such a nice place. The Colonial-style architecture gives it the feel of a Zorro film, and it is close to El Barrio Bar, The Blue Parrot Bar and Grill, and other bars along 7th Avenue.

San Pedro Hostels: Zoola and Casa Atitlan

Midway between the Santiago and Panajachel docks, Hostel Zoola and Casa Atitlan are centrally located and convenient to all the restaurants, bars and schools in San Pedro La Laguna. Both have private rooms as well as dormitories.

Zoola’s Bar Pool is the town’s only heated pool, with a close-up lake view and a big bar at the entrance overlooking the pool. Q25 entry includes first drink. Great restaurant too.

Casa Atitlan, at the former site of Jarachik, has rooftop rooms have fine vistas, and the Cafe Atitlan restaurant has booths and covered tables in the garden. And the bar serves house drinks like Cuba Libres and Gin and Tonics for Q9.

Live Music and Theme Parties

At Alegre Pub tonight, Roots Cafe will play Reggae & Hip Hop. El Barrio is hosting a Pajama Party with a live reggae band, and Zoola has a Night Before Christmas Party with live music at the pool.

This is the day to party at Alegre Pub, San Pedro’s original sports bar. Brahava and Bravha Extras are only Q5, and the Brahva girls will be dancing tonight.
